Home Ec. Show-Offs

Would you look at that proud stack of gumdrop pillows! The pillows (pattern by Amy Butler) were all made by Mrs. Stavig's 8th grade Home Ec. students.  For many it was their first experience with a sewing machine and they all did a great job.

NWQG Spring Retreat

The Annual Retreat was awesome this year, thanks in (a huge) part to Diane. We had such a good time in the classroom making our Entwinded quilt, an original pattern by Pam Ventgen. The weather was lovely and we were able to walk and take breaks.  Every time we would visit down to the Home Ec. room, all the ladies there were happily quilting along, too. Please let me know if there are success pictures you would like me to post. These two Entwined quilt tops were the first to be finished. Julie's is the pink floral and Tammy's is the purple gem.

Wow! Amy and Angela were able to make an awesome new website for the Northwind Quilters Guild. It looks great and has so much information, be sure to check it out (there is a link to the left)!
Along with the website is information on the Annual Meeting which will be held on April 23. Please make plans to attend...there will be doorprizes galore!

NWQG Spring Retreat News

Here it is ...INSPIRATION...
Diane brought us the sample quilt for the Spring Retreat class (what a cool optical illusion made with basically a nine patch). The class will be during the weekend of April 18 and will be taught by Pam, a quilting teacher from Anchorage. Can't wait to see you all there. I'll post more when I know more...like yardage and color suggestions:)

Look at her go!

Actually I think it turned out fine . . . I thought the fabrics really didn't showcase as well as I wanted them to, but I like the crispness of it! What a fun book . . .I have already been surfing the pages for another! I think I need to get a life!Kay

Trading Patches Success!

Is it spring yet? I am happy to report that I have finished my trading patches quilt top! I love it!!!! It is amazing . . . . .and HUGE! I made it 18x23 so that is 414 squares in all and 90 x 115 finished as my blocks were 5.5"!! Hope this entices you all to begin putting your tops (or blocks) together if you haven't already started or finished!!! I really enjoyed creating each block . . . .and developed a pretty efficient system for piecing the rows together too. It could be more perfect where the joints meet . . .but OH WELL!!! It is pretty hard to see at 5-10' . ..and it just doesn't bug me that much! WAHOOO I am thrilled to have this part done . . .so I can move on to another project . . .still trying to stick with my new years resolution of finishing projects I have already started, have fabric for etc etc . . . I think I would really like to do something like a table runner next . . . I might need more instant gratification!
Happy Quilting!! Kay

Got Plarn?

Autumn Bryson from the Native Village or Eyak is planning some craft events for the Earth Fair on April 18th. She's interested in teaching kids and adults how to crochet with plastic bag yarn or "plarn." In fact, she learned to crochet just for this project--way to go Autumn!

If you have any great plarn projects (Yes, I'm thinking of you, Kris Kokborg), let Autumn know and she'll display them at the Earth Fair. She's also looking for helpers to come and help lead kids in the craft.

Too good to leave where it is...

We are also knitting together on Monday nights at the Net Loft for anyone who wants to join us-lots of tea, fun and laughs. Mid April we will be meeting Wednesday nights at the Net Loft to knit on Elizabeth Zimmerman's very popular BSJ (baby surprise jacket) if anyone wants to knit along. Hope to see you there between 7 and 9.

This tid-bit was posted as a comment and it OBVIOUSLY needs to be upfront and center! Thank you:)

Bonnie Hunter Fan Club

Yesterday we wrapped up our last spring time meeting of the Cordova Chapter of the Bonnie Hunter Fan Club:) We had a gourmet potluck and a few good hours of cutting and piecing and figuring and fretting. Hopefully we'll recruit some new members and meet again around Columbus Day for a autumn assessment of our progress.
There are a lot of upcoming dates to know about...let me know if there are any I have missed!

Saturday, March 21-ongoing mitten class for intermediate knitters at the NetLoft and the Tablerunner of the Month club at the Fabric Camp

Spring 2009

Spring is here in Cordova, AK.
With all of the extra sunlight the Fiber Artists in Cordova are getting so much done. So I thought it was about time to get this blog started so we have a great place to share all of our hardwork/handiwork.
Please feel free to post information about yourselves and your recent projects so we can all have a chance to admire your art and appreciation of our Fiber Arts community here in Cordova.
